Step 03: Base Color Fill
Yeehah!!! >w< Now for the fun part~ Coloring our lineart~ Remember to save often as you color. 'Accidents' happen even to the best CG-ist O__o;; You never know when your comp is gonna go on one of its moody crashes.... ^__^;;;;

So let's start coloring. X3 First off I recommend that you get a reference pic of Lina to get an idea of her proper colors. Here's one I compiled from some Slayers site:

* The pic on the left is a sample of cell-style coloring. Notice the difference from the pic on the right, which was from the manga. Disclaimer: Pictures are from Slayers Screenshot Gallery & Dragon Slayer

1) Right. Now we're gonna start off with the base colors. What you have now:

Create a new layer directly below the outline layer, and call it 'Skin'. We're gonna start by filling in her skin color. Use the polygonal lasso tool ( Feather =0, leave the Anti Alias checkbox on ) and start selecting the areas of her skin within the outlines. If you can't see the Polygon Lasso icon, click and hold onto the Lasso icon for 3 seconds and you'll see a set of extra tools appear.

You can just click over the 'outlines', they will remain undisturbed because they're on a separate layer =3 I hope you know how to fill the selected areas with color.... O_O ...... Edit > Fill  or use the Paint Bucket tool. And although using the Magic Wand tool may seem like a shortcut way to do the selections, I seriously don't recommend its usage. >_<

The Magic Wand is Evil~~~~ @__@ DO NOT USE IT UNLESS YOU KNOW WHAT YOU'RE DOING~ =P

Like so...

2) Cool! Now we got Lina's skin colored. ^__^ Now using the same steps as above, make separate layers for each color. Remember all color layers should be BELOW the outline layer. Don't worry about the shadings yet, we're gonna do that later. ^__^

The layer order that I used:

Outline, Skin, Pink, Yellow&Gold, Hair, Cape, Cape Inside, Misc (for her shoulder guards, eyes and the jewels on her clothes), Gloves&Boots and finally White (for white areas of the pic, such as the white of the eyes).

Here's a sample pic of my layers panel (you don't have to follow mine exactly, just as long as you put each major color on its own separate layer. All the teeny tiny stuff such as the jewels can be on one layer together)

Base colors are done! ^o^

3) Allrighty then. X3 We're now going to add the shadings to the pic in the next step. But before we move on, switch on the Preserve Transparency for each layer (pls refer to Step 02 - 3).

.....Done? Let's move On to Step 04 ==>>
