[ How to color Anime/cell-style in Adobe Photoshop 7 ]

Tutorial done by Animetor Lily

Preparing the Lineart | Creating an Outline layer | Base Color Fill | Shading

Hair Shading | Special Effects // Adding a background

Step 04: Shading
Okay~ you're doin fine so far... ^.^ Now begins the shading works. We're gonna imagine the light source is coming from the top left of the pic, like so:

1) Make sure that all the layers have Preserve Transparency switched on. First, we're gonna start off by shading her skin. Select the 'Skin' layer. Use the eyedropper tool to select the current color of her skin. Select the same color for both the Foreground and Background colors in the Toolbars pallette. Ok now click on the color box that is on top (Foreground color) and select a darker shade of color for her skin.

Tip: This is how I usually choose my colors in a cell-style rendered pic. It's no necessity to choose colors this way, this is just how I do it   ^__^;

1. Starting from the original skin color, I move the vertical arrows up or down a bit (depends on whether I want a lighter or darker version of the base color).

2. Next I move the tiny black circle in the big gradient box diagonally down. I get a darker color of the base color that will blend with the current base color.

2) Use the Polygon Lasso tool at Feather 1px, and select around the area you want shaded, and Edit > Fill > Foreground Color. You should get something like the above pic.

3) Are you guys still with me here? =P OK, now you get the idea, just do the same to all the parts of the pic. There are no actual guidelines as to where you should put the shadows, just imagine the light to be coming from one direction and shade as you see fit. ^___^ Also, remember to think about the contours of the objects in the pic. In short, think 3-dimensionaly. It takes a lot of practice and experience to get it right. Just don't be afraid to experiment, and remember that it's OK to make mistakes. You learn from your mistakes, ne?

4) Here's how my pic looks so far. You can click to enlarge:

Her skin and clothes are shaded....

*I've shaded in her clothes and skin. Let's color her eyes and the jewels on her outfit next~ ^-^

5) Her eyes aren't THAT visible when the picture will be resized, so we'll keep the details to a minimum.

 i) Use the Polygon Lasso tool to fill in a darker color....
ii) Select an even darker color (almost black). Use a small brush to color in the pupils.
iii) Finally pick white color, use an even smaller brush to draw the white highlight. Done!

6) Next on the list are the jewels on her outfit. ^__^   The same techniques as the eyes are used...

The preciousssss jewelssssss...

i) Use the same techniques as the eye coloring to color the jewels... You can use a small brush to paint instead of the Polygon Lasso tool. Next...

ii) Change the brush mode to Overlay, and lightly dab at the lightest area of each jewel...

...Shineyyyy~~~ @o@

iii) You get a very shiney jewel there~~ Ooooohhh~ @w@

7) Move on to color the blue jewels and her earrings the same way~ Remember to switch the brush mode back to normal before you have an accident XD   Don't forget to color the metallic stuff holding the jewels! We're gonna color her hair next~
